Evidence-based lower limb retraining – Retraining lower limb skills following stroke and brain injury – a 3-day workshop.
Target audience – The workshop will be of interest to physiotherapists from hospital and community based settings, as well as occupational therapists, who teach adults following stroke and acquired brain impairment, as well as university lecturers. The workshop focuses on retraining of limb skills. No pre-requisites.

Cost: $830 AUD for internal registrants/ employee of Wellington/ Lower Hutt DHB –
$850 AUD for external registrants ($900-$940 NZD depending on exchange rate on the day of payment)
Also available: $450 AUD registration also available for ‘lecture only’ option, which includes attendance at morning lectures on all 3 days, observing demonstration of clinical assessment/training session with a stroke survivor on the afternoon of Day 1 (15.30-16.30pm), observing review of clients trained on Day 1 (13.30-14.00pm), plus the full manual and catering over 3 days.
Learning Outcomes: At the completion of this course you should be able to:
- Describe what it means to be an evidence-based clinician
- Apply that knowledge to the rehabilitation of people following stroke or traumatic brain injury
- Understand the biomechanics of sitting and standing balance, standing-up, and sitting-down and walking
- Analyse movement problems and skills involving the lower limbs, taking into account neural, biomechanical, musculoskeletal and environmental factors
- Distinguish between compensations and missing essential components
- Plan and implement appropriate training strategies for the identified movement problems.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of chosen training strategies
- Modify training strategies in response to changes in the learner’s performance
- Critically evaluate and modify teaching skills to optimise practise and training
Pre-requisites: Registrants must hold a current registration with the Physiotherapy Board of NZ or equivalent to work with stroke survivor participants during the clinical sessions. Registrants must also have had at least two COVID-19 vaccinations.
Number of registrants: Limited to 24 therapists because there are clinical sessions involving 8 stroke survivors and small groups of 3 therapists. The workshop presenters assist teams of therapists to assess and establish a training program for the 8 stroke survivors.
About the presenters:
Dr. Simone Dorsch is a physiotherapy clinician, researcher and educator. She has 20+ years experience in stroke, brain injury and aged care rehabilitation. Simone is a senior lecturer at the Australian Catholic University in North Sydney.
Karl Schurr is a physiotherapy clinician, researcher and educator. He has over 30+ years’ experience in stroke, brain injury and aged care rehabilitation in Australia and the UK.
